Rafael Marchan begins rehab stint with Jersey Shore and the Phillies have a log jam at catcher with roster moves incoming

Rafael Marchan will begin his rehab stint with the Jersey Shore Blue Claws tonight, returning from the 60-Day IL.
The 23-year old catcher was placed on the 60-day injured list on April 7th with a left hamstring strain. When a player is sent to the. 60-day IL, they no longer take up a spot on the 40-man roster. Back in April, the Phillies used Marchan to call up Bryson Stott for Opening Day.Â
Marchan will bat second for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws tonight. With his return, the Phillies will need to make a roster move, meaning they will likely DFA a player or have to move someone else to the 60-day injured list.
Where will Rafael Marchan play after rehab stint?
I am certainly not going to complain about a logjam of catching prospects in the Phillies’ farm system but decisions will need to be made on where Marchan will end up playing.
Logan O’Hoppe was named to the MLB Pipeline’s Team of the Week after slashing .550/.640/.1.350 (11-20), with five home runs, a double, eight RBIs and eight runs scored. The Phillies are adamant on getting him consistent playing time at Double-A Reading.Â
At Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Donny Sands is having a productive season, slashing .308/.420/.583 with two home runs and 16 RBI.
Regardless of where Marchan will end up, the Phillies will need to clear a roster spot once his rehab stint is over. I would look at James MacArthur, Damon Jones, and either Odubel Herrera or Roman Quinn as possible DFA options when Mickey Moniak finishes his rehab stint.Â
As for the Phillies, Bryce Harper gave them a late lead last night against the Atlanta Braves but Joe Girardi can’t manage for shit and sent Nick Nelson out in the 9th inning for the save, which of course, he blew and the Braves walked it off with a 6-5 win.
