X-rays reveal fractured middle finger for Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak

Mickey Moniak left the second game of a doubleheader at the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night after taking a pitch off his finger on a bunt attempt in the ninth inning.
After receiving x-rays, it was announced yesterday that Moniak had fractured his finger. If the break is anything like Jean Segura’s, who was out from May 31st to August 4th, then it’s likely that Moniak will be out for the remainder of the season.
Tough break for the Mick. After absolutely dominating Spring Training with the Phillies and earning himself the starting centerfield job, he took a pitch off his hand in the final game down in Florida and missed the first few months of the season.
Mickey Moniak Home Run No. 1 with the Angels
Moniak was dealt for Noah Syndergaard at the MLB trade deadline, and has been starting for the Angels in centerfield. Over 5 games with the Angels, Moniak was batting .286 with 4 hits, 2 home runs, 3 RBI, and 4 runs scored.
Mickey Moniak Home Run No. 2 with the Angels
When speaking with the Los Angeles Angels media earlier this week, here’s what Moniak had to say about his time in Philadelphia.
“Looking back on my time in Philadelphia, I was grateful for it, (being) given a chance as an 18-year-old kid, came up with them, debuted with them. But I think that you know, for me, I’ve always been a guy that maybe takes a little bit to get comfortable at every level, and once I get comfortable, it’s on from there. So, wasn’t really given that opportunity there, which makes sense. They’re always in a pennant hunt with a lot of money on the field, so just to be here and be told that you’re gonna go out and play and have some fun is huge.”
There’s a good portion of Phillies fans on the internet that have taken Moniak’s comments negatively, but no matter how you feel about it, he’s certainly not wrong. Moniak appeared in just 47 games at the major league level slashing just .129/.214/.172 in 105 plate appearances, with 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 12 hits, and 41 strikeouts.
You have to feel for Mickey Moniak. The kid is a special ballplayer when he’s swinging the bat with confidence, and news of another injury is just brutal to see.
Get well soon, Mick.
