Yes, Aaron Schatz needs to be stuffed into a locker for saying Patrick Mahomes is ‘the guy’ because of dumb, advanced analytics

In solidarity with our friends over at Crossing Broad, The Liberty Line is in full agreement with stuffing Aaron Schatz, the “statsexual” who runs Football Outsiders and writes for ESPN into a locker.
Aaron Schatz is an idiot.
Okay so if you’re a normal football fan just enjoying the NFL every weekend and can rationally identify when a player is good, then you probably have no idea what this dork is talking about, and that’s how it should be.
Unfortunately, people like Schatz, paired with other bozos in the national media continue to let advanced analytics ruin sports and decide to institute new statistics to prove whatever point they are trying to nail home on television and/or social media.
Basically, Shultz believes that Mahomes is “the guy” which I think it’s safe to say he’s talking about winning the NFL MVP.
I honestly had no idea what DYAR is but luckily, Kevin at Crossing Broad was able to track down the definition, which is a ripe six paragraphs long on the Football Outsiders website.
It’s important to note that anything outside of a normal Box Score for a sporting event and takes six paragraphs to explain is probably a poor indicator of anything relevant to the sport in question.
So here’s what Defense-Adjusted Yards Above Replacement means:
DYAR: Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. A Football Outsiders stat which compares the performance of each player, in terms of DVOA, to a replacement-level baseline rather than the league average for that position, then translates that total into yardage. Because DYAR is a total stat, not a rate stat, it helps show the importance of workhorse running backs and receivers who can draw the attention of the defense away from other players. DYAR replaced DPAR as our method for measuring individual players with the publication of Pro Football Prospectus 2008 in July 2008. The method and the computation of replacement level are discussed further here.
Awesome. I didn’t even read it. I stopped at DYAR and decided that no matter what that nonsense says, that doesn’t erase the point that ESPN and the “statsexuals” continue to do this to sports and it drives myself and any other normal-thinking person on social media absolutely insane.
We have seen this time and time again. The NBA Deep State can’t get enough of these dumb analytics and make up new LEBRON and RAPTOR stats each season to prove that Jokic deserves to win another MVP over someone like Joel Embiid.
Now, we’re doing it with the NFL and coincidentally, another Philly sports athlete in Jalen Hurts.
