Hot Mic Alert: Flyers issue an apology after ‘disrespectful remarks’ heard on Zoom call with Garnet Hathaway
Yesterday on a Zoom call, Philadelphia Flyers employees were caught on a “hot mic” during an interview with forward Garnet Hathaway.
Hathaway signed a two-year deal worth $4.75 million with the Flyers earlier this month. Previously, he played four years with the Calgary Flames and split time last season with the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins.
Giana Han from the Philadelphia Inquirer asked Hathaway why he chose to sign with the Flyers, who are clearly in full rebuild mode. During the question, you can hear Flyers’ employees off camera say the following on a hot mic, unaware that anyone could hear them.
“How many times is she gonna ask this fucking question?”
“The Flyers suck, why do you want to be here?”

Keith Jones and the Flyers’ organization released an apology following the incident
“Earlier today, our team’s social media account streamed a recording of a virtual press conference which included disrespectful remarks by members of our social media staff. On behalf of the entire Flyers organization, I want to extend our apologies,” said Flyers president of hockey operations Keith Jones. “Any disrespect towards reporters is completely unacceptable, especially when they are simply doing their job. We have reached out to the reporter and outlet personally to express our regret, and will continue to promote an environment of mutual respect when working with media.”
I mean seriously. As my guy Sean Brace indicated above, rule number one in media broadcast is to always assume that all microphones are HOT to avoid situations exactly like the one yesterday during the Hathaway Zoom call.
However, at the end of the day, I’m not going to sit here and pretend like the “hot mic” statements were the worst thing ever and overly criticize the employees.
People on social media are blowing this way out of proportion.
I mean honestly, who really gives a shit what two-behind the scenes employees said while not realizing they were on a hot microphone and being heard by other people?
Plus, the Flyers do suck. Maybe give that girl a raise and see what else she has to say about this franchise. I want to hear what else she has to say about what’s happening behind closed doors in the Wells Fargo Center.
Obviously it’s not a “good look” for the Flyers organization but let’s not pretend you have never trashed your job before. The entire thing should just get looked over by the end of the day today and everyone should move on. Spare me the bullshit about “being respectful to the media” and “this is an outrage and an example as to why female journalists are discredited in sports media” nonsense.
It’s not any of that and the people who are stating it spend more time bitching about being in “media” than actually writing about the sports they supposedly cover.

They do suck and will continue to suck as long as Torts is the coach. Lappy should have been the head coach even before they thought about bringing in AV. They let Lappybwalk and then got rid of Ghost for nothing and in the past 2 years Ghost is a 50 point scorer. Where would we have been with an extra 50 points and a good D-Man the past 2seasons. Lappy took the Phantoms to the playoffs did AV or Torts do that,no. Fire Torts trade for Ghost and bring up Lappy as HC we will be playoff bound if those 2 things happen.But no Danny and the owners just want mediocrity,not a team that is feared like the old days when all teams hated playing us.Thats what we need again old time Flyers hockey.
