Carson Wentz Eagles Draft Picks

Here’s how the Carson Wentz trade brought four franchise players to Philadelphia

The 2021 offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles was a pivotal turning point in the direction of the franchise following a disastrous 4-11-1 season. Carson Wentz requested a trade and the Eagles shipped their once franchise quarterback to Indianapolis in return for two draft picks.

Eagles trade Carson Wentz to the Colts for 2 Draft Picks:

The Philadelphia Eagles Received:

  • 2021 third-round pick
  • 2022 conditional second-round pick

The Indianapolis Colts Received:

  • Carson Wentz

2021 Offseason: Roughly a month before the actual draft happened, the Eagles executed a trade with the Miami Dolphins, moving back from the No. 6 overall pick to the No. 12 pick.

Draft Day: The Cowboys were on the clock at No. 10 and in a very rare trade between the two NFC East rivals, the Eagles swapped draft picks with Dallas and selected DeVonta Smith with the 10th overall pick. The move also required the Eagles to give the Cowboys the third-round pick that they received in the Carson Wentz trade from the Colts.

Conditional Second-Round Pick: The Eagles now had one pick remaining from the Carson Wentz trade – a conditional second-round draft pick that could become a first-round pick if Carson Wentz played 75 percent of the Colts’ offensive snaps or 70 percent of the Colts’ snaps if they made the playoffs.

Colts Collapse: Wentz played 98 percent of the snaps for the Indianapolis  that season and it turned out to be even better for the Eagles because he failed to lead the Colts to the playoffs. All Indianapolis needed was a win against the Raiders or Jaguars to make the playoffs but instead, they lost both games and were eliminated from contention.

First-Round Pick: That gave the Philadelphia Eagles the Colts’ first-round pick which came in at No. 16 overall.

April 4, 2022: Howie Roseman added draft capital by agreeing to trade the 16th and 19th overall picks, along with a sixth-round pick (No. 194 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for five draft picks.

The New Orleans Saints Received:

  • 2022 NFL Draft, pick 16 (Carson Wentz Conditional)
  • 2022 NFL Draft, pick 19

The Philadelphia Eagles Received:

  • 2022 NFL Draft, pick 18
  • 2022 NFL Draft, third-round pick No. 101
  • 2022 NFL Draft, seventh-round pick No. 237
  • A 2023 first-round pick (No. 10)
  • A 2024 second-round pick (No. 50)

The Eagles then traded the No. 18 draft pick and the third-round pick from the Saints to the Tennessee Titans for wide receiver AJ Brown.

The Saints finished the 2022 season with a 7-10 record and their first-round pick in 2023, owned by the Eagles, ended up being the 10th overall pick.

With the Chicago Bears on the clock at pick No. 9, the Eagles traded up one spot in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick to select Georgia DT Jalen Carter.

The Eagles then drafted cornerback Cooper DeJean with the 2024 second round pick they received from the New Orleans Saints, giving the franchise a solid foundation on both sides of the football for years to come.
