Lane Johnson Tyler Guyton

Lane Johnson hinting at Oklahoma Tackle as Eagles top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The Philadelphia Eagles certainly have their work cut out for them this offseason.

Now that both coordinator positions have been handled and the ongoing process of staff signings continues, the upcoming NFL Draft will be the primary focus of the offseason.

Many Eagles fans assume that defense will be the focus in the draft, and I’d imagine it would be. However, knowing the way Howie views the draft and the organizational philosophy as a whole, you can’t ever rule out the team drafting in the trenches early on.

Jason Kelce may not be returning, and Lane Johnson appears to be towards the end of his career, so it only makes sense to attempt to replace both players.

While it’s certainly a tall task, the best approach would be to draft talent in the first few rounds and let Jeff Stoutland work his magic.

Lane Johnson’s mentorship of Tyler Guyton

Tyler Guyton on Eagles RT Lane Johnson

“He’s meant a lot to me; being a right tackle, I think he’s the best right tackle to ever play football. I talk to him all of the time. He’s become a mentor to me, like a big brother. And learning from him elevates my game, and I feel like it’s also more challenging for him to make me better. It’s like a big brother-little brother relationship.”

Guyton isn’t a Lane Johnson clone, but there are certainly similarities between the two. Both came from Oklahoma and were not viewed originally as the best offensive lineman in their respective classes. But as we all know, it’s not how you start but how you finish. If Guyton is able to have Lane as a mentor and Stoutland developing him, there’s no limit to how good the young 6 foot-7 328 pounder could become for the Eagles.

Lane wasn’t shy about the idea of him taking Guyton under his wing either.

“I told Stout if y’all pick somebody I think Tyler would make sense. Or maybe the JC Latham kid,’” Johnson said of the Alabama tackle. “You could have Latham at guard for a couple of years, and whenever I get done, you could slide him to tackle.”

Guyton is viewed by many scouts as strictly a tackle. But, the Eagles could utilize him and his talents right away at right guard, for example, just like how they did with Cam Jurgens, who was originally just labeled as a center. It’s also worth noting that Guyton would likely be open to these ideas as he’s been moved around a lot in his football playing career.

Originally playing left tackle but was moved to the right side halfway through his first season at Oklahoma; he ended up blossoming at that position. Guyton actually played two seasons at quarterback and some at running back, dating back to his youth days.

Not to mention, he thought he would thrive the most at defensive tackle early on in his career. This is where the similarities to Lane start to connect, as the Eagles tackle went from quarterback to tight end to defensive end, to finally tackle where he’s arguably been the best in the NFL over the course of his career.

Do not be surprised if this is the prospect Howie Roseman zeroes in on in the first round of the NFL draft.
