WATCH: Home plate umpire CB Bucknor calls for a Rain Delay with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th inning between White Sox and Cardinals
Saturday’s matchup between the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals went to extra innings with heavy rain flooding the field at Bush Stadium.
The White Sox were leading the Cardinals 6-5 with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Before White Sox pitcher John Brebbia and Cardinals batter Nolan Gorman were able to settle things at the plate, home plate umpire CB Bucknor called for a rain delay.
White Sox vs Cardinals: 2 Outs, Bottom of the 10th Inning, Bases Loaded Rain Delay
Again, this game was in the bottom of the 10th, with 2 outs, the bases loaded, and an 0-1 count and instead of hanging tough for the final batter, CB Bucknor sent the game into a 3-hour rain delay.
Play resumed 3-hours later and Busch Stadium was pretty much empty. The White Sox sent reliever Tanner Banks to the mound with Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera replacing Nolan Gorman at the dish.
In what was initially going to be a high-leverage finish to the ballgame, the actual result was anti-climatic with Banks striking out Herrera on an 88 mph changeup off the plate.
I mean that’s just a brutal call right there. On top of the final pitch being called a strike when it clearly outside, could you imagine waiting 3-hours in the pouring rain, battling the weather conditions at Busch Stadium just to get burned yet again by home plate umpire CB Bucknor?
Cardinals fans, at least the ones left, must have been furious on how the game ended.
St. Louis is off to a slow start to the 2024 MLB season, sitting at 15-18 in the National League Central and in fourth place, trailing the Brewers, Cubs, and Reds while holding a half-game lead over the Pirates at the bottom.
