Phillies trim scouting staff. More layoffs incoming.

The Phillies notified seven members of their scouting staff that their contracts will not be renewed when they expire at the end of this month. The list includes household names such as Pete Mackanin and Dave Hollins. The team will also part with Howie Freiling, Jesse Levis, Jeff Harris, Mike Garcia and Chris Knabenshue.
The scouting industry has been hit hard by layoffs and cutbacks simply due to a changing baseball landscape and COVID-19 certainly didn’t help. The pandemic has thrown teams into several tough decisions on how to manage their staff. I would expect more to come throughout the offseason.
The Phillies front-office is on record stating they expect to lose over $100 million in revenue due to COVID-19. They have already offered buyouts throughout their organization.
The Cubs recently laid off more than 100 employees due to revenue loss. The Phillies organization and employees have been told that layoffs are “inevitable.”
