Players who are 19-years old and have played for four years or players who are 18 and or younger and have played for give years are eligible for the Rule-5 Draft. Players selected in the draft cost $100k and must spend their next season in the majors or can be offered back to the team that drafted them for a smooth $50k.
Notable Rule-5 Draftees for the Phillies include Shane Victorino and Odubel Herrera. Players who were not protected include LHP Zach Warren and David Parkinson. Power-hitter Jhailyn Ortiz and RHP Kevin Gowdy were also not protected. These players will be eligible to be selected in the draft on December 10th.
The Phillies 40-man roster now consists of 37 players. On December 2nd, we will hit the deadline for tendering 2021 contracts for arbitration.
