Jean Segura’s name has popped up in trade talks

Phillies middle infielder Jean Segura has come up in trade talks per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Robert Murray of FanSided expanded on the rumor tweeting that the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the teams that have discussed trading for Segura with the Phillies.
The Phillies front office has remained dead silent since late October. At the tender deadline, the team did the bare minimum and brought back a bunch of players. They have still made no significant moves in free agency.
For a team that’s already facing the loss of Didi Gregorious in free agency, trading Jean Segura could leave them having to replace both middle infielders that started for them during the 2020 season. Segura hasn’t been bad for the Phillies, notching 835 plate appearances and batting .276 with 19 home runs and 12 stolen bases. His numbers have declined since Arizona and Seattle where he batted .308 in just under 1,900 plate appearances.
Unless the Phillies plan to eat money, Segura would be an expensive trade piece for a team who is unwilling to spend any type of money this offseason. Any team trading for Segura would be making a two-year, $29.5 million dollar investment that includes a $1 million dollar buyout and a $17 million dollar club option in 2023.
It would also mean that the Phillies are content on Scott Kingery as their primary second baseman heading into next season. I don’t hate Kingery as a primary second baseman for the Phillies and believe he will bounce back next season. However, I also don’t like giving up a middle infielder that has proven his abilities to play multiple positions as needed.
Keep an eye on this but if I was a betting man, I would expect to Segura to be in a Phillies uniform next season.
