Eagles hire Dennard Wilson to be new defensive backs coach

Jonathan Gannon’s defensive staff is starting to come together. Yesterday the Eagles hired Dennard Wilson to be their new defensive backs coach. Wilson is another young coach, just 38-years-old but has almost a decade of experience coaching in the NFL.
Wilson was previously the New York Jets defensive backs coach since 2017. In 2019, Wilson added the title of passing game coordinator to his role, helping in designing coverages for the Jets. Before arriving in New York, he held the same title with the Rams for two seasons.
Under Wilson’s coaching, the Jets passing defense was near the bottom of the list, but they never had much secondary talent. Former Eagles defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel lasted just one season in Philadelphia.
Hopefully, with the disappointing season from Avonte Maddox and this group’s depth in 2020, Wilson can coach them back to form. Darius Slay is on the wrong side of 30, and the Eagles need to get him some help fast.
