Eagles DE Genard Avery moving to linebacker

The Eagles have a new linebacker for the 2021 season. Former defensive end Genard Avery is now transitioning to linebacker. Avery’s build works far better to be a linebacker as opposed to a lineman. He stands at only six feet tall and 250 pounds. For comparison, both Josh Sweat and Derek Barnett are over six foot three.

Avery was a linebacker when he was at Memphis but transitioned to the line following the draft. While with the Tigers, Avery put up the following stats in his junior and senior year:

  • 159 tackles
  • 33 tackles for loss
  • 13.5 sacks
  • Two interceptions
  • Three forced fumbles

His track record is impressive, and he has all the needed traits to succeed in his natural position. The Eagles defensive line does lose some depth, though, with his position change and defensive tackle, Malik Jackson expected to be cut.

When at DE for the Eagles, Avery only recorded one and a half sacks and rarely saw the field. With an open opportunity at LB, Avery has an excellent opportunity to expand his game and make a much more significant impact than he did on the D-Line.
