Spencer Howard added as 27th man on Phillies roster for doubleheader

The Philadelphia Phillies will play a doubleheader today in New York against the Mets after last night’s game was postponed due to inclement weather. In the case of doubleheaders, clubs are allowed to recall one additional player who is on the 40-man roster to serve as the 27th member of the active Major League roster only for the day of said doubleheader.
That player for the Phillies is none other than Spencer Howard. Howard, who was in competition all Spring to make the Phillies’ Opening Day roster, is the organization’s top prospect. He saw some action last year at the MLB-level but failed to impressed and was bothered with injuries and lack of preparation.
It’s unlikely that Howard will see any action today, but if Chase Anderson runs into some trouble, Girardi may turn to Howard as someone who can eat up some innings. The first game will be at 4:10pm and the second game won’t start earlier than 7:10 pm thanks to ESPN. Each game is seven innings a piece. Keep an eye out for how aggressive the Phillies are with their bullpen arms.
Regardless, it’s good news to see that the Phillies first option is Howard. It’s inevitable that they will turn to him at some point this season.
