Flyers play spoiler, knock Pens out of first with 7-2 victory

The East Division’s first-place team, the Pittsburgh Penguins came to to Philadelphia last night looking for an easy-win against a bad Flyers team. Unfortunately for the Penguins, that got everything but that, as the Flyers destroyed Pittsburgh 7-2, playing spoiler and knocking the ‘Pens out of first place via a tiebreaker with the Washington Capitals.

After three straight losses, all to the New Jersey Devils, the Flyers matched their season high in goals and improved to 5-2-0 against their PA rivals in the Penguins. Kevin Hayes, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Claude Giroux all scored goals to give the Flyers a 3-0 advantage. It was the first time in 10 games that the Flyers held a lead in a hockey game after the first intermission.

Jakub Voracek had three assists, moving him into 10th place on the Flyers’ all-time points list. Alex Lyon earned his first NHL win since February 1, 2020. Flyers prospect Wade Allison proved yet again that his shot is as good as advertised and scored a goal last night.

Up Next: In a season filled with disappointment, it was good to see the Flyers come out and beat up on the Penguins. They’ll wrap up their eight game regular-season series against Pittsburgh tonight at 7 PM.
