Phillies Updates: Segura, Gregorius, and this week’s starting rotation

The Phillies are an absolute train wreck. If you haven’t noticed, I’m not handling the barrage of blown saves very well. I will however, say that my featured image skills have reached a whole new level. They honestly mean more to me than actually writing about the Phillies these days. Unfortunately, this is the team that I pour my heart and soul into every Spring, Summer, and (very early) Fall. So as the team keeps killing us, I’ll be here. Credit to me for continuing to write about them.
Last night, the Phillies held a 4-2 lead heading into the final two frames of the ball game and ended up losing 12-4. Seriously. Tonight, they are back at home against the Miami Marlins. What could go wrong? Miami is the only team worse than the Phillies in the NL East.
Should be an easy three game series for the Phillies heading into this weekend, where they will play three games at home against the San Diego Padres. For those who will take me seriously when I say that, please don’t. I’m filled with hate and false optimism about this Phillies team. We will fight through the pain and get through it this summer together.
The Phillies do have some starters returning to the lineup at some point this week. Looks like Jean Segura will be making his return any day now, with Didi Gregorius following shortly after.
Jean Segura
Jean Segura has been out since June 26th due to a groin injury. Jimmy Cigs was having a very strong season, hitting .332 with an .845 OPS. He had 12 doubles, three home runs, and 20 RBI in 49 games, all while spending two stints on the injured list with leg injuries. Segura could return as soon as tonight, and will undergo a a pregame evaluation to see if he’s ready to play.
Didi Gregorius
The Phillies also hope to welcome back Didi Gregorius, who has been out since May 13th with a bone bruise and swelling in his right elbow. In 32 games this season Gregorius is hitting .229 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Last night, Didi walked, singled, doubled and drove in a run in five innings of work for the IronPigs.
The Phillies have stated that Didi will be evaluated again today, and will likely play a few more games in Lehigh Valley before returning to the team. The Phillies need all the help they can get, so getting two regular starters in Jean Segura and Didi Gregorius back in the lineup will certainly help.
The only problem, is that neither are reliable bullpen arms. The Phillies have blown 21 saves this season. It’s not even July and they are only four blown saves away from a franchise worst. They have managed to blow seven saves over the past week. It’s an absolute nightmare on the mound right now after the starters exit the game.
Speaking of starters, Joe Girardi has announced the Phillies’ rotation through Saturday.
- Vincent Velasquez will start tonight.
- Aaron Nola will pitch Wednesday.
- Zach Eflin will pitch Thursday.
- Zack Wheeler will pitch Friday.
- Matt Moore will pitch Saturday.
Girardi has not named a starter for Sunday. Until then, we have a jam packed week of Phillies baseball against the Marlins and Padres. It’s not like things could get any worse for the Phillies. Might as well jump head first into the mud and we can ride this shit show the whole way until September.
I’ll try to be happier next post, but just like the Phillies’ bullpen, there are zero guarantees.
Ring the Bell, baby.
