White Out Weekly: Illinois v. PSU Preview

White Out Weekly: We Are…..back from what felt like the longest bye week in history, especially coming off of that “death by a thousand paper cuts” loss at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Penn State Nittany Lions will be back in Happy Valley this weekend as they will kickoff at noon eastern time on Saturday, donning their “generations of greatness” jerseys against the woeful 2-5 Illinois Fighting Illini.
Penn State is hoping that the bye week was well timed as they rolled in fairly banged up with John Lovett, Devyn Ford and Jonathan Sutherland leaving the Iowa game with undisclosed injuries, team captain PJ Mustipher who was just announced is lost for the season, and most notably QB1 Sean Clifford.
It is now Friday, and the public still does not have any idea who will be starting under center for the Nittany Lions tomorrow. According to James Franklin all 3 quarterbacks (Sean Clifford, Ta’quan Roberson, Christian Veilleux) have been splitting the first team reps evenly this week. With Penn State pegged as a 24 point favorite, and a primetime Halloween eve matchup looming in Columbus, one would think they’d try to squeak by Illinois with the likes of Roberson and/or Veilleux.
However, now having suffered their first lost, and a berth in the B1G Championship game still within their own control, Franklin would be hard pressed to not consider having Clifford shake off some rust and ensure they come out of Beaver Stadium with a win.
More on the QB front, Class of 2022 QB Drew Allar (Medina, OH) was awarded his 5th star this week by 247sports and has climbed the ranks to become the #1 Ranked quarterback in the country for the ’22 class. He becomes the first 5-star QB to commit to Penn State since 2013 when Christian Hackenberg committed to Bill O’Brien and the Nittany Lions, previous to that it was Anthony Morelli in 2004. Class of 2022 RB Nicholas Singleton (Governor Mifflin, PA) is also ranked as the #1 RB in the country, so the potential backfield in State College for the 2022 season and years to come could be something very special.
On this week’s episode of White Out Weekly, we dive into the murky quarterback situation and give our thoughts on the Hawkeyes already losing their #2 ranking to the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers. Trivia is back as Lucci forces me to use up one of my lifelines, and B1G Betting Bonanza heads into Week 8 and all I can say is…..follow me for locks.
