Report: Outfielder Starling Marte drawing interest from the Philadelphia Phillies

It’s that time of the year where reports start to come out about big-name free agents, and this time it’s Starling Marte. Dave Dombrowski is deep into general manager meetings, prioritizing his list of needs to upgrade this Phillies roster. Earlier today, Jon Heyman reported that the Phillies are interested in a big named outfielder.
The Phillies are in much need of a true centerfielder, and Marte is a perfect fit for this ball club. With Odubel hitting free agency, and not knowing the time-frame on a consistent Mickey Moniak, the Phillies really need to shift gears to find a centerfielder for the future. Dombrowski just recently listed the centerfield position as one of his main priorities this off-season, and it seems like he’s going to do what it takes to make Starling Marte a Phillie.
Starling Marte hit .310/.383/.458 in 2021, with 12 HRs, 55 RBIs, and 145 hits, good for an OPS of .841. He is also one of the biggest base threats in the league, swiping 47 bags last season. He’s a two-time gold glove winner, one-time all-star, and is an impactful player in the outfield as well. Marte split his time last season with the Marlins and the Athletics, with his stats sort of even with both teams.
The biggest thing with Starling Marte is that he’s consistent. Consistency has always been a weak spot for the Phillies, and getting a player in the outfield that can constantly steal bases and hit the ball for you would be a huge addition. Pairing Marte next to Harper would also be one of the scariest outfield duos in the league. Marte posted a .990 fielding percentage throughout the 2021 season and can get to just about any ball that is hit anywhere in his direction.
