First look at Julius Erving and the 76ers in HBO’s “Winning Time”

On Sunday night, HBO Max released the first episode of their new show, Winning Time, which details the rise of Magic Johnson and the Showtime Lakers. Numerous NBA legends appeared, including Magic, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Larry Bird.
Of course, it was expected several other key figures from the 80’s would appear in the show, and we just got confirmation that the 76ers and Julius Erving would be among them.
Actor Jordan Southerland posted a clip of the makeup team turning him into Dr. J on his Instagram, and it looks pretty good. Southerland filmed a scene with Quincy Isaiah, who plays Magic Johnson.
What’s confusing is Erving is depicted in the 76ers’ uniform that they wore from 1971 through 1978. Magic didn’t begin his career until 1979, so it’ll be interesting to see how it’s involved.
It’s likely some continuity error that only a nerd like me would notice, as Southerland also briefly shows the classic white and red uniforms Philly wore in the 80s.
Having played each other in the NBA Finals three times in the 80s, Erving, Moses Malone, and other Sixers are sure to be staples of the new series. Episode two drops Sunday night on HBO.
