Phillies Roster Moves: Williams DFA’d, Crouse and Marchan optioned to minor league camp, and more from Clearwater

The Phillies made numerous roster moves today following their 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers down in Clearwater.
Nick Castellanos will wear #8 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and was officially announced as a member of the team today. In a corresponding move, the Phillies have designated Luke Williams for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Williams is hitting the waiver market after a somewhat positive rookie season with the Phillies. The 24-year-old hit .235/.315/.316 in 2021, hitting 1 HR and 6 RBIs. His single home run was one of the highlights of the 2021 season, a walk-off home run in his first major league start.
Williams had 24 hits in 98 at-bats with the Phillies last season. Although it’s unlikely, we could still see him back with the Phillies if he clears waivers.
Additional Roster Moves
The Phillies also announced that Hans Crouse and Rafael Marchan have been optioned to minor-league camp. Pitcher Kyle Dohy and outfielder Johan Rojas have been reassigned to minor-league camp as well.
Marchan spent a good portion of last season as the backup catcher for the Phillies. He hit .231/.286/.346 in 20 games, tallying 1 HR and 4 RBIs. With Andrew Knapp no longer with the team, Marchan is fighting for the backup catcher role, along with Garrett Stubbs and Logan O’Hoppe.
The four players optioned will now receive everyday reps in preparation for the 2022 season. The Phils have sent a total of seven players back down to the minors, after reassigning O’Hoppe, Jhailyn Ortiz, and Luis Garcia yesterday.
