Phillies fall to Rockies 4-1 in series opener

Aaron Nola allowed two runs and that was enough for the Rockies to hand the Phillies their second straight loss, 4-1.
The Phillies stink right now.
When the hitters are hitting then the pitching falls apart. When the pitching is good, this team scores no runs. Tonight was already the 6th game that the Phillies have failed to score more than 3 runs.
Part of it is players like Bryson Stott, who is mired in an 0-17 slump, dropping his average to .138. Or Kyle Schwarber who went 0-4 tonight as is now slashing .125/.205/.300.
Thank god we have Alec Bohm! He’s slashing .571/.550/.714 and is the only Phillies player batting over .300
Aaron Nola pitched well but Chad Kuhl was even better. Kuhl, a University of Delaware alum, and native of Newark, De threw 6 innings of 2 hit ball en route to the win.
It could have been worse too. The Rockies were only 1-11 with RISP.
The Phillies are now 1-5 on their first road trip of the season.
At least the Sixers are beating those pathetic Toronto Raptors.
Rockies (7-3) Beat Phillies (4-7)
- Winning Pitcher: Chad Kuhl (1-0)
- Losing Pitcher: Aaron Nola (1-2)
- Save: Alex Colome (1)
Aaron Nola was cruising early on striking out Brendan Rodgers with this nasty changeup.
An excellent throw from the best catcher in baseball.
Kudos to Bryson Stott with the nice tag as well..
Rhys Hoskins got picked off earlier in the game, but redeemed himself making a nice catch in foul territory.
This was a pitchers duel through 5 innings with both teams combining for only 5 hits in a ballpark known for its wild offense.
Aaron Nola with another home run allowed, this time courtesy of Charlie Blackmon. I feel like I bring it up every time Nola pitches, but I will say it again. If Nola is ever going to return to his previous level where he was a Cy Young Award candidate he needs to limit his HR%. In the past few years he has been trending closer to 3.5% up from 2.1% in 2017, when he was an all-star.
Aaron Nola: L , 5.1 IP, 6H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
1-0 Rockies
This is the first moment of the 2022 Phillies season that I was mad enough to shout obscenities at my television.
Jose Alvarado had ZERO control tonight. Let me know if you have heard that one before..
His first pitch was three feet from the strike zone and it only got worse. I felt terrible for JT Realmuto, he’s out there earning every dollar of his contract chasing Alvarado’s garbage around.
Alvarado threw six pitches. Two were nasty cutters and the other four were wild pitches going 100 mph. Realmuto couldn’t catch up to this sinker allowing CJ Cron to score. The run was credited to Aaron Nola.
2-0 Rockies
I like what I have seen thus far from James Norwood this season. Even so, Randall Grichuk smashed this 2 RBI double to extend the Rockies lead.
4-0 Rockies.
The Phillies are finally on the board thanks to this RBI double by Didi Gregorius.
4-1 Rockies
The Phillies were seriously threatening the Rocks when JT Realmuto lined out to Jhoulys ChacÃn to end the 8th inning with two left in scoring position.
I cant say for sure whether that was going to be hit, yet it sure feels like JT got some shit luck here.
That was also the last real opportunity the Phillies had at clawing back in this game, as the Phillies failed to record a hit in the 9th inning.
Up Next
The Phillies will look to bounce back in Denver as they visit the Rockies in game two of the three game set.
Kyle Gibson (1-1) will start against Kyle Freeland (0-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:40 pm.
NBC Sports Philadelphia WILL carry the broadcast of the game.
