Phillies Roster Moves: LHP Bailey Falter recalled to start today’s matinee, OF Matt Vierling sent to Triple-A

Phillies LHP Bailey Falter has been recalled from Lehigh Valley (AAA). As a corresponding move following last night’s loss, OF Matt Vierling was optioned to Triple-A.
Bailey Falter started the season in the majors but was sent down after just 4 games, tallying a 4.91 ERA. Falter is truly a starter at heart, and with Zach Eflin and Zack Wheeler on the COVID list, the Phillies will put the ball in Bailey Falter’s hands to get the start today. Falter had two starts in the minors this season, tallying 0 earned runs allowed in 5.1 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Matt Vierling has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as a corresponding move. Vierling struggled to start the season, slashing just .170/259/.213 in 23 games. He started off the season 0-19, and after a dominant first year in 2021, he couldn’t get his footing back to start this season. Odubel Herrera’s return hasn’t helped Vierling as well, who’s hitting .289/.300/.605 in 14 games with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs.
Vierling’s demotion seems like a quick move just for Falter to be up for today’s start, and if Wheeler and Eflin return soon, you could see him back with the team, depending on what pitchers stay on the major league roster. Hopefully, this move is a stepping stone in the right direction for the return of Mickey Moniak, who’s still sidelined with his hand injury.
Up Next for the Phillies
The Phillies take on the Mariners today at 3:40 EST in hopes to win their first series in a while. Bailey Falter will make his first professional start of the season and will go up against Logan Gilbert.
