Preview: Phillies eye series win after last night’s wasted Rhys Hoskins masterclass

The Phillies take the field today at 1:05 EST, looking to salvage a series win after last night’s bullpen collapse. Kyle Gibson (4-2, 4.41 ERA) will get the ball for the Phillies, going up against Daniel Castano, making his first start of the season.
Last night’s loss was one of the most frustrating ones of the season. After a historic night from Rhys Hoskins, crushing two HRs and 6 RBIs, the bullpen crumbled.
Jeurys Familia allowed a three-run homer in the 7th, Seranthony followed that with his first allowed HR of the year, and Corey Knebel would eventually load the bases in the 9th. JT Realmuto dropped a routine pop-up right off of his glove, which would lead to a two-run single by Jesus Aguilar that same at-bat. The Phils would show a little fight in the bottom of the 9th, but it wouldn’t be enough, as they would fall to the Fish 11-9.
Tuesday night felt like a prime Joe Girardi game. It was a concerning move to take Eflin out of the game with just 80 pitches through 6 innings, but we would learn after the game that Eflin was dealing with left knee soreness, the same knee he has his procedure on months ago.
The Phillies now sit at 31-31, 9.5 back of the Mets in the NL East, and 4.5 games back of the last Wild Card spot. Today’s game is massive. The Phillies can be the old Phillies, and crumble to the Marlins like they’ve done year after year, or they can win a ballgame.

Kyle Gibson vs Daniel Castano
Kyle Gibson takes the hill for the Phillies today, making his 8th home start of the season. Gibson is 4-1 in CBP this season, holding a 3.63 ERA with 35 strikeouts. Gibson is due for a dominant outing, as he’s allowed at least 2 earned runs over his last five starts and hasn’t gone farther than the 6th inning in any.
Pablo Lopez was supposed to pitch for the Marlins today, but Don Mattingly said yesterday that his “bullpen didn’t go as planned”. The Fish will now be throwing Daniel Castano, who has not started a game this season in the pros. He’s thrown three games out of the pen and has not allowed an earned run in four total innings.

Phillies Starting Lineup
Lineup Notes: The top of the lineup stays the same. Odubel Herrera gets the nod in centerfield, and Bryson Stott is back at 2nd. Garrett Stubbs is behind the plate, giving JT Realmuto a much-needed day off.
Prediction
Last night was a gut-wrenching loss, but I do believe the Phillies get back on track today and win the series vs the Marlins. 6-3 Final.
