The Phillies beat the Padres 4-2 on Saturday, despite losing the services of Bryce Harper, who broke his finger on an inside pitch from Blake Snell in the 4th inning.

Philadelphia can’t have anything nice. Just when this team was starting to click and within a few games of a wild-card spot, the baseball gods struck the best player in the National League with a thunderbolt. In case you haven’t heard by now Bryce Harper was hit by a high and inside pitch 97-mph fastball from Padres starter Blake Snell in the 5th inning.
At first I thought Harper had been hit in the head, but then I saw Bryce clutching his hand, while Jorge Alfaro attempted to console him with a concerned hug. From that moment, you just knew that the reigning NL MVP was going to be missing an extended period of time.
On his way to the dugout with team trainers, Harper appeared to be yelling at Snell in anger, but was instead accepting the former Cy Young Award winner’s apology. Harper could be seen repeating ‘I know, I know’, reinforcing Snell who was tipping his cap in appreciation of the injured slugger.
It’s going to be almost impossible to replace the offensive production and fire that Harper brings to the lineup, but i’m not buying that the season is over. Just last year the Braves managed to win the World Series without their best player Ronald Acuña Jr. I don’t think this team is nearly as good as that Atlanta team, but I think there’s a chance this team rallies and stays around the .500 mark. If Bryce can come back in August, maybe they have a shot.
After the game Phillies General Manager Dave Dombrowski stated that it was too early to tell whether Harper would require surgery to repair the broken finger.
In Harper’s post game presser, a clearly dejected Harper lamented on the injury…
“I’m just really bummed for the organization, the guys and, you know, the City of Philadelphia fans as well. I love running out there playing every day”
Blake Snell just missed Bryce Harper’s head, but instead hits him in the hand..
A clearly pissed off and hurt Harper has words with Padres pitcher Blake Snell about the pitch..

Andrew Bellatti notches a solid inning of work in the 6th, while a section of friends and family look on from the stands. His sinker or slider was on fire tonight!
Brad Hands follows up Andrew Bellatti, with an efficient inning of relief in the 8th.
