Back the Bats: Phillies Best Bets Tonight vs Nationals

The Phillies took game one of four against the Nationals last night in just five innings. They are now 8-2 over their last 10 games and tied for the last Wild Card spot in the National League with the St. Louis Cardinals.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Nationals are 36-71 which is the worst record in all of baseball.

Tonight, we have Kyle Gibson on the mound, who has been solid over his last four starters, throwing for at least six innings and allowing two earned runs or less in three of those starts.

The Nationals will send Josiah Gray to the mound to face Gibson. Gray is horrible, carrying a 4.59 ERA into tonight’s matchup.

The key point with Gray is the fact that he’s allowed an unbelievable .319 ISO to left handed batters this season.

Kyle Schwarber and Darick Hall each have ISOs above .270 against right-handed pitching this season.

I would also consider Rhys Hoskins, a right-handed batter, who has a .212 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. Hoskins homered last night, but if there’s anything we do know about the Phillies first baseman, his hot streaks come and go and when he’s hot, he goes nuclear. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him hit another one tonight off Gray.

I hate being a stat boy, but for those who are unfamiliar with ISO

ISO measures the raw power of a hitter by taking only extra-base hits — and the type of extra-base hit — into account.

For example, a player who goes 1-for-5 with a double has an ISO of .200. A player who goes 2-for-5 with a single and a double has a higher batting average than the first player, but the same ISO of .200.

That being said, here are three home run props tonight for the Phillies.

Odds to Hit a Home Run

  • Kyle Schwarber +230
  • Darick Hall +330
  • Rhys Hoskins +310

Overall, I like the Phillies -1.5 at -104 and the over 9 runs at -102 as well.
