Injury News: Lions to be without top rookie in Week 1 matchup vs. Eagles

It looks like the Eagles won’t have to deal with Jameson Williams in Detroit come Week 1.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the rookie wideout will miss the season opener against Philadelphia.
“We’re going to be very smart with him,” Lions GM Brad Holmes told ESPN. “He’s in a good place right now. It’s not going to be Week 1.”

Detroit traded up 20 spots to select Williams in April’s draft, who could be the most explosive receiver in this year’s class when healthy. Williams is coming off a torn ACL suffered in the National Championship Game and although he’s recovering well, the Lions have no desire to rush him along.
After being buried on the depth chart at Ohio State, Williams transferred to Alabama for his junior season and caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards (led SEC) and 15 touchdowns. I’m not shocked that Detroit wants to protect their investment.
With Williams ruled out, the Eagles’ defense will be tasked with containing WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds, and TE TJ Hockenson.
