Series Preview: Phillies head to Great American Ballpark, square off against the Cincinnati Reds for 3 games

The Philadelphia Phillies head to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Reds in a 3-game set. Noah Syndergaard (6-8, 3.96 ERA) will get the ball in tonight’s 6:40 opener, going up against Mike Minor (1-9, 6.24 ERA).

After a tough weekend against the rival New York Mets, the Phillies will get an easier opponent to start off their week. The Reds sit at just 45-68 on the season, tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 17.5 games back of the NL Central. The Reds have a run differential of -111 on the season, are 25-34 at home, and are 3-7 in their last 10 games.

The Phillies, although they lost the series in NY, are 7-3 in their last 10 games and still hold the third Wild Card spot, trailing the Braves and the Pirates. They hold a comfortable 1.5-game lead against the Brewers, who are 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Phillies need to take advantage of a bad Reds team this weekend, as the Brewers have four in a row against the Dodgers, who are 11-1 in their last 12.

The offense struggled terribly against New York, combining for just three runs in three games. They got shut out in the last two games vs deGrom and Bassitt, making it the first time they’ve been shut out in back-to-back games against the Mets since 2010. Although they recorded 9 hits against Chris Bassitt on Sunday, they couldn’t capitalize with RISP, missing 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd chances, both with no outs.
