Phillies #2 prospect Mick Abel dazzles in debut with double A Reading

Mick Abel, the 21-year-old Phillies #2 prospect had a strong debut outing for double-A Reading, picking up the win in a 4-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dawgs.
Abel, who was recently promoted to Reading along with #1 prospect and fellow 1st round pick Andrew Painter, tossed 6 strong innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 8 hitters.
Abel looked comfortable against the stronger competition, retiring 17 of the 24 batters he faced while throwing 62 of his 89 pitches for strikes. With the win Abel lowered his ERA across both levels to 3.94 over a total of 91 1/3 innings.
Abel has been rocketing up the prospect rankings since being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and is graded as the #57 overall prospect in all of baseball in MLB Pipeline’s most recent mid-season rankings.
The combination of Mick Abel, Andrew Painter, and Griff McGarry were labeled as ‘untouchable‘ at this season’s trade deadline by General Manager Dave Dombrowski. The 23-year-old McGarry who also recently cracked the top-100 prospect list starred at the University of Virginia and is widely seen as the closest to making his big league debut in South Philadelphia.
He has had a tremendous second professional season and has been consistently making headlines, including striking out 13 hitters in a start during the month of June.
Andrew Painter will be making his own debut at Double A Reading this afternoon at 5:15 pm EST against Portland. You can watch it for free here by following this link for MLB.tv.
