Aaron Nola bounced back in a big way after allowing 5 ER in his last start in a loss to the Mets on August 19th. Nola helped propel the Phillies to a four-game sweep of the hapless Reds with a 5-hit complete game shutout. The win was Nola’s 2nd career complete game shutout and the Phils are now a season high 15 games above .500.
Thats amazing news considering that Bryce Harper in scheduled to return to the team tomorrow in the series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Nola was electric, striking out 11 Reds hitters and walking none over 101 pitches. He was also efficient against an inexperienced and lousy Reds lineup, need only 69 pitches through his first 7 innings while only giving up a single hit.
Nola ran into a bit of trouble in the 8th inning when he allowed back-to-back singles before getting three straight Reds hitters to strike out swinging, ending the inning and any chance of the Reds putting up runs on the night. Nola also struck out 2 hitters in the 9th before ending the game by forcing Aqunio into a ground ball to the mound.
It was Nola’s first nine-inning shutout since a 2-0 win over the Cardinals on April 18, 2021, when he allowed just two hits
Edmundo Sosa had 3 RBI’s including two on ground ball single in the 7th inning and Kyle Schwarber added his National League leading 35th home run in the 3rd. It was the second time in the last two weeks that Sosa had a 3 RBI night against Cincinnati.
With the win the Phillies are now 2.5 games ahead of the scuttling San Diego Padres who have lost two straight and four out of six games.
Kyle Schwarber sends a solo home run to deep center field into the trees off Reds starting pitcher Justin Dunn.
1-0 Phils
Edmundo Sosa drives in two mores runs with a base hit into right field. What is going on with the Reds defense in this series?
