Series Preview: Phillies kick off 2-game set with the Blue Jays as just 16 games remain

The Philadelphia Phillies welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to South Philadelphia tonight for a massive 2-game set kicking off at 6:45 EST.
The Fightins will look to keep the buzz in South Philadelphia alive after a wild Monday Night Football win for the Eagles across the street last night. Kyle Gibson (10-6, 4.45 ERA) will be on the mound, going up against Ross Stripling (8-4, 2.94 ERA).
With just 16 games to play in the regular season, crunch time is officially upon us. The Phillies didn’t make the final road easy for themselves, getting swept by the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. Luckily, our Mets got a huge win over the Brewers on Monday night while the Eagles were smoking the Vikings, pushing the Phillies’ current lead in the WC to 2.5 games (3.5 with tiebreaker).
The Phils played Toronto twice back in July, and the offense certainly struggled, hitting .138/.138/.246 across those two games with just 9 hits and 23 Ks. That was in Toronto, and the team will now look to turn their previous struggles around against a team that is looking to lock up their playoff spot as well.
Here’s where the Phillies stand in the NL Wild Card

- Tuesday: Kyle Gibson vs. Ross Stipling
- Wednesday: Zack Wheeler vs. Kevin Gausman
Kyle Gibson vs. Ross Stripling
Gibson is coming off a six-inning performance against Miami where he allowed just 6 hits and 1 earned run. Gibson holds a 3.90 home ERA in 2022 with a 7-3 record, along with 92.1 innings thrown in 16 starts with 68 Ks and an OBA of .249.
Ross Stripling will face off against the struggling Phillies offense, who has been slightly worse on the road this year, holding a 3.21 ERA when in America. He has a 5-1 record on the road, however, and Toronto has won 7 of his last 8 starts.

Prediction
The Phillies really need to bounce back here against the Blue Jays before the Braves come to town for a 4-game set later this week. I think they will rise to the occasion tonight and grab a win. If the offense can jump out to an early lead tomorrow and let Wheeler settle in on an innings restriction, I do like the chances of the Phillies taking two against the Jays.
One series at a time. We’ll get to the Braves when the time comes.
