Sean Couturier injured again as the Flyers issues begin to pile up just days before training camp

Just last week, Sean Couturier was considered healthy heading into Philadelphia Flyers training camp, which begins on Thursday morning. Now, apparently that has changed.
Sean Couturier Injured (Again)
Monday afternoon, Anthony San Filippo of Crossing Broad reported that Couturier had suffered a herniated disk in his back during pre-camp training last week. The Flyers then announced that Couturier has an “upper-body injury” and he would be re-evaluated during training camp and that he was “week-to-week”. It was then reported by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli that Coots would likely miss 6-8 weeks assuming surgery wouldn’t be required.
Cool.
Coots was limited to 29 games last season because of a back injury that required surgery and it remains unclear if the injury is related to what he dealt with last season. He had surgery back in February of last year, cutting his 2021-22 campaign short, but was skating again with teammates in April. Just last week, Coots himself said he was healthy.
But of course, like everything that involves the Philadelphia Flyers, the worst possible outcome arrived and now Coots health is a major question mark heading into the 2022-23 season.
Check this list out from The Athletic Highlighting All Things Bad About The Flyers
- No. 2 pick Nolan Patrick misses entire season due to head issue/injury, never returns to previous form with the Flyers.
- Oskar Lindblom diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in the midst of a breakout season, unable to return to previous form with the Flyers.
- The 2019-20 season is paused due to a pandemic, halting the Flyers’ most sustained run of excellent play in close to a decade, form that they could not recapture in an unprecedented bubble playoff structure later than summer.
- Team suffers a COVID-19 outbreak in 2020-21 while tied for the East Division lead.
- Starting goaltender Carter Hart struggles with pandemic-related mental health issues, leading to a collapse in his on-ice play.
- Second-line center Kevin Hayes suffers a core muscle injury which dramatically hampers his on-ice play.
- Key 2021 offseason acquisition Ryan Ellis suffers a “multi-layered pelvic issue” and plays in just four games in 2021-22; his return remains in serious question.
- Kevin Hayes’ first core muscle surgery proves unsuccessful, and a second one is required just before the start of 2021-22 training camp.
- All of Morgan Frost, Wade Allison, Tanner Laczynski, Tyson Foerster, Zayde Wisdom, Samuel Ersson and Bobby Brink suffer significant injuries over a 19-month span, pushing back all of their developmental timelines and dramatically weakening the prospect pool and organizational depth in the short-term.
- Couturier injures his back before his eight-year, $62 million mega extension even begins.
- Hayes’ second surgery doesn’t work either, requiring a third procedure to truly get to the heart of the problem (an infection).
- The team suffers its second widespread COVID-19 outbreak in two seasons.
- Projected backup netminder Ivan Fedotov proves unable to leave Russia for the start of the 2022-23 season due to political complications arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- Two division rivals win the draft lottery — New York Rangers in 2020, New Jersey Devils in 2022 — with the Flyers getting jumped in the draft order by the latter.
- Joel Farabee suffers a neck injury while training during the 2022 offseason and undergoes surgery to resolve the problem.
Jesus Christ, man. lol.
The list goes on but you get the point. Now, the Flyers are left with more questions than answers heading into camp. The boys over at The Liberty Yell are recording a new episode of the pod tonight so be sure to tune in and see what they think about the Flyers heading into camp.
