As a West Virginia alumni, I can confidently say that the football program just hasn’t found its footing over the last few seasons. The Mountaineers suffered a late loss to Pitt during Week 1’s return of the Backyard Brawl. From there, they lost in overtime to Kansas before steamrolling FCS Towson last week.Â
The Hokies enter tonight 2-1 on the year with new head coach Brent Pry and new quarterback Grant Wells who transferred from Marshall.
West Virginia vs Virginia Tech Betting Notes
- WVU is averaging 46 points per game.
- West Virginia is 13th nationally in total offense, averaging 513 yards.
- Virginia Tech is averaging 23.7 points per game.
- Virginia Tech defense is allowing just 12.3 points per game.
- Virginia Tech ranks fifth nationally in total defense, allowing 201 yards per game
- The Hokies are 13-5 at home on Thursday Night games (23-10 overall)
- West Virginia won 27-21 last year in Morgantown
West Virginia’s offense has been cruising with JT Daniels behind center and will certainly be in a hostile environment tonight at Lane Stadium against a VT defense that has been solid over the first three weeks of the season.
If WVU can score early and often, they’ll be able to take the crowd out of the game and should have no problem heading back to Morgantown with the Black Diamond Trophy.
I like JT Daniels behind center and love the rushing attack that features freshman running back CJ Donaldson, who already has two 100-yard rushing games and six touchdowns on the year, that includes an average of 9.2 yards per carry and an 82-yard buddy against Towson last weekend.
I’m not buying into the Virginia Tech defense at all.
How could you? They lost to Old Dominion Week 1 followed by two straight wins against Boston College and Wofford. I don’t see any good football program on their schedule. WVU will be the first real test and they aren’t even that good.Â
Picks: WVU -2.5 (-108) | Over 50.5 (-110)
I also need a WVU win simply to keep the Black Diamond Trophy Twitter account in good standing. It’s an automated account that tweets DAILY how long either WVU or VT have held the Black Diamond Trophy and it’s been great over the past year.Â
