Phillies (83-67) Beat Braves (93-58)
- Winning Pitcher: Aaron Nola (10-12, 3.28)
- Losing Pitcher: Jake Odorizzi (5-6, 4.61)
- Save:
Rhys Hoskins and the Phillies jumped all over Braves starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi tonight, scoring 4 runs in the 2nd inning. Alec Bohm led off the inning with the first of his three hits on the night and Brandon Marsh and Jean Segura reached on a walk and a single respectively to load the bases. Bryson Stott knocked in the first run with a sacrifice-fly, followed by Matt Vierling with an RBI single and finally Rhys Hoskins with a two-run double.
The Phillies would add their 2nd 4-run inning of the night that was highlighted by Rhys Hoskins two-run shot to deep left field off Odorizzi.
Aaron Nola was locked in tonight and has officially shaken off any narrative regarding a September collapse. Nola kept the Braves potent lineup scoreless through 6 inning while allowing only 4 hits and striking out 8.
Tonight Nola became the just the third Phillies pitcher in the last 120 years with at least 200 strikeouts and fewer than 30 walks through their first 30 starts of the season. The other two? Roy Halladay in 2010 and Cliff Lee in 2012.
Thats pretty damn good company.
With the win the Phillies moved a half game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the 2nd wild card spot in the National League. Because the Phillies own the tiebreaker over San Diego and Milwaukee, if they go just 6-6 in the final 12 games to finish 89-73, Milwaukee would have to go 9-2 to finish 90-72 and surpass the Phils.
JT Realmuto narrowly misses a home run to right field in the 1st inning.
Rhys Hoskins makes a fantastic defensive grab at first base for the 2nd out in the 2nd inning.
Matt Vierling extends the Phils lead with an RBI single in the 2nd inning.
