Sixers expected to sit multiple starters in preseason opener vs. Nets

The wait is finally over. Sixers basketball is back! After a long offseason, the team kicks off its preseason schedule with a high-profile matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm, and the game will air on NBA TV.
While many will be tuning in for Ben Simmons to finally make his return to basketball, the Sixers are pacing themselves for what they hope is a long season. Like most teams do in the preseason, the full roster is not expected to take the floor tonight.
Doc Rivers reveals plan for Sixers preseason opener
Following the action on the final day of training camp, Sixers head coach Doc Rivers touched on his game plan heading into the team’s first preseason matchup. While talking to the media, he mentioned that at least three starters are expected to be on the sidelines.
“Not many of them, but a couple may,” said Rivers. “It’s still not really decided, honestly. At least three will sit.”
While most might like to see him get his revenge on Simmons, Joel Embiid is likely among the top favorites to have the night off. Everyone knows the damage the All-Star can do on the court, so expending his energy in the preseason is a gamble they shouldn’t feel urged to take.
One positive of Rivers sitting multiple starters is that it gives an extended opportunity to guys at the bench end of the rotation. Given the newfound depth the Sixers have after a successful offseason, the competition for minutes will be tougher than ever. Getting extra run in the preseason could lead to someone earning more playing time to open the year.
