NFL Draft: Eagles meet with potential backup QB at scouting combine

With QB Gardner Minshew heading to free agency, the Eagles will need a new backup behind Jalen Hurts in 2023.
GM Howie Roseman has always valued quarterback talent regardless of who the starter is, and they’ve already begun to scout this year’s draft class at the NFL Combine. According to The Inquirer’s Devin Jackson, the Eagles have reportedly met with QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson out of UCLA.

During my combine preview last week, I wrote about him as a player to watch this week:

Across his five-year career at UCLA, Thompson-Robinson completed 63.2% of his passes and threw for over 10,000 yards with 88 TDs. Thompson-Robinson poses a similar build to Jalen Hurts (6’1 “, 205 lbs), and his dynamic dual-threat ability would allow Philadelphia to utilize the same playbook if Hurts went down.

Five-year starter with below-average size, above-average mobility and a recent history of improvement at the position. Thompson-Robinson played in a favorable scheme for quarterbacks, but he also improved as a field-reader over time.
While he can extend plays and create opportunities for himself outside of the pocket, he’s at his best when he’s throwing on time and utilizing possession throws as his base. He has lapses in vision and judgment against zone and when pressured, so he must cut down on ill-advised throws. Thompson-Robinson has the potential to find a home as a QB3 with a QB2 ceiling.
Thomspon-Robinson saw his accuracy improve from 62% to nearly 70% during his final year at UCLA and has experience in a similar RPO system that the Eagles currently implement, rushing for a career-high 645 yards last season. If Roseman likes him enough, Philadelphia could select their new QB2 on Day 3 of the draft.
