The Phillies have released former #1 overall pick Mark Appel while also reassigning three players to minor-league camp.
LHP Ben Bowden, RHP Louis Head, and C Max McDowell have been reassigned to minor-league camp ahead of today’s matchup with the Baltimore Orioles.
In addition to the reassignments, RHP Mark Appel, a former #1 pick by the Houston Astros, has been released by the Phillies. Appel has had an unfortunate career in Major League Baseball, as injuries and setbacks have held him back from his full potential.

Appel made his major league debut nine years after getting drafted in the summer of last season and has now been released by the Phils. The Phils currently have many bullpen options, mostly consisting of guys younger and more promising than Appel, so this unfortunate move doesn’t come as a real shock.
Mark Appel announced the other day that this season would be his last season of baseball. Appel released a very promising thread, explaining everything that’s going on through his head and his journey.
