Rubber Match: Phillies go for third-straight series win at 1:05 with Matt Strahm on the mound

The Phillies got back on the right foot on Wednesday with some late-game heroics, as Nick Castellanos and the Phillies bullpen led the way to a 6-5 win.
Today, the Phils will take the field at 1:05 EST in a matinee series finale vs. the Seattle Mariners on ESPN.
Starting Pitchers
- Matt Strahm (1-2, 3.00 ERA)
- George Kirby (2-1, 3.57 ERA)
Wednesday night’s win was a crucial one for the Phillies, who were looking to avoid falling back to 3 games under the .500 mark. Nick Castellanos led the way with his third homer of the season in the first inning, finishing the game with two singles, a homer, and 3 RBIs.
The Mariners crushed on Taijuan Walker early, as JP Crawford cracked a grand slam followed by a Julio Rodriguez bomb out to left-center. Taijuan Walker left the game after just four innings and 68 pitches with “right forearm tightness,” but it was later announced by Rob Thomson that the pulling of Walker was a precautionary move, and the team expects the injury to be nothing serious.
The Phillies chipped away throughout the game, but four singles in the bottom of the 8th pushed the Fightins to a 6-5 lead. Jose Alvarado closed out the game like he always does and is now down to a 0.79 ERA on the season.
The powder blues will be back in action for the second time this season as the Fightins look for another series win. After a rough start to their season, the team now has a chance to get back to .500 ahead of a brutal 6-game road trip to Houston and Los Angeles.
The Mariners have been led by Eugene Suarez, Jerred Kelenic, and former Phillie J.P Crawford in this series, who are all hitting .375 or better. Matt Strahm has pitched better at home this season, holding a 2.61 ERA at two starts at CBP. Strahm has favored righties this season, allowing just a .130 average compared to a .300 against lefties. Luckily for Strahm, the Mariners will send seven righties to the plate in today’s rubber match.
Mariners Starting Lineup
Matt Strahm vs. George Kirby
Matt Strahm gets the ball for the Phillies today, looking to build off his 11-strikeout performance back on April 20th vs. Colorado. Strahm got a little roughed up but threw his best stuff of the season, but the Phillies couldn’t help him out at the plate, resulting in a 5-0 loss. Strahm holds a 3.00 ERA on the season with 27 Ks and a 0.94 WHIP.
George Kirby makes his third start against the National League today while holding a 1.50 ERA on the road. His last start lasted six innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Kirby favorites lefties, so look out for guys like Nick Castellanos, Edmundo Sosa, and Alec Bohm at the plate today.
