Phillies make four roster moves ahead of tomorrow night’s series opener vs. the Red Sox

The Philadelphia Phillies made four roster moves today as they open up a 3-game set with the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Phillies Roster Moves

  • Selected Contract of RHP Jeff Hoffman
  • Yunior Marte Optioned to Lehigh Valley
  • Nick Nelson Reinstated from 15-day, optioned to Reading
  • James McArthur Designated for Assignment

Jeff Hoffman exercised the opt-out option of his contract on Monday afternoon, and the Phillies decided to add him to their 40 and 26-man roster instead of letting him walk. Hoffman was signed in the offseason and has thrown hard in the minor leagues, sitting around 98-99 out of the pen for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Command has always been Hoffman’s issue, but the firepower is there.

Yunior Marte was optioned to Lehigh Valley for the second time this season, and James McArthur was DFA’d to make room for Jeff Hoffman on the 26-man.

Nick Nelson returns from the 15-day IL after recovering from a left hamstring strain. Nelson was used as a long reliever last season, but with the Phils’ bullpen being a little deeper than it has been in previous years, there’s not really a spot for Nelson at the moment.

The Phillies have lost four straight and desperately need a bounceback series. They face a struggling Red Sox pitching staff this weekend but a lineup that has impressed so far to start the season.
