Connor Brogdon will start tonight’s game vs. the Giants
Bailey Falter has been struggling for the Phillies so far in 2023, holding a 5.75 ERA in seven starts. He’s logged a 1.39 WHIP and has allowed 3+ earned runs in every start since April 8th. The Phillies have not won a game that Falter has started since the team’s second home game of the season, and Falter went just five innings in that one.
Connor Brogdon has been fantastic for the Phillies in the bullpen this season, tallying a 2.61 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances. Brogdon has allowed just three earned runs since April 11th while holding a 1.16 WHIP. Brogdon has been specifically great on the road, which has been a common trend throughout his career, holding a 1.59 ERA in eight appearances with just two earned runs allowed.
The Phils are obviously not as confident in Falter right now as they were compared to the beginning of the season. They skipped his scheduled start this weekend in Colorado with Ranger Suarez returning to the rotation, and they want to have the bulk of his innings come toward the middle of tonight’s matchup.
Brogdon has started one game in his entire career: a one-inning opener for Kyle Gibson vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. He allowed one hit in an eventual 8-2 loss to the Dodgers.
