Nurse, who won an NBA title with Toronto in 2019, takes over for Doc Rivers, who was fired after Philadelphia’s second-round collapse to Boston. His connections to Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, made the Sixers a prime destination for his services.

Nurse’s outside-the-box coaching style, with his player development and playoff experience, could benefit the Sixers, who haven’t been to the Eastern Conference Finals since the Allen Iverson-led days in 2001.

As one the most successful coaches in defending Joel Embiid, it’ll be Nurse’s task to extract the most out of his superstar, who turns 30 years of age next season. Nurse reportedly chose the Sixers over the Phoenix Suns’ open vacancy and will become the 26th head coach in franchise history.
