Preview: Alec Bohm hits the IL, Phillies make a roster move ahead of today’s matchup with the Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies look to avoid their fourth-straight loss today vs. the New York Mets at 1:10 EST.
Starting Pitchers
- Taijuan Walker (4-2, 5.57 ERA)
- Max Scherzer (4-2, 3.54 ERA)
Last night’s 4-1 loss capped off an ugly month of May for the Phillies, who have now fallen to 25-30 on the season and trail the Atlanta Braves by 7.5 games in the NL East.
Another scoreless night with runners in scoring position killed all possible momentum on Wednesday night, as the Fightins are now 5 for their last 34 with a man on second or third. Even with nine total hits on the night, the Phillies plated just one run against Carlos Carrasco, which was an Edmundo Sosa homer that crept a few inches over the orange line of the left-field fence.

Aaron Nola didn’t have his best stuff once again, going six innings while allowing four hits and four earned runs while walking three and striking out five. Contract year continues to be a tough start for Nola, as he’s now up to a 4.70 ERA in 12 starts in 2023.
The Phillies have lost 11 out of their last 16 games and kick off the month of June with a tough battle, as the always-lethal Max Scherzer takes the hill for New York with the sweep on the line.
If you’ve been keeping up with The Liberty Line, you know that the unofficial start of the MLB season is June 1st. Happy Opening Day.
Alec Bohm Heads to the IL
If things couldn’t go any worse for the Phillies, Alec Bohm is headed to the injured list with a hamstring injury. Drew Ellis has been called up from the minor leagues to fill into the current 3rd/1st platoon. Ellis has logged 182 innings of third base at the Major League level, committing just one error in that time.
Ellis, 27, has slashed .269/.380/.628 between 21 games in Double and Triple-A this season, logging eight homers, 27 RBIs, and 21 total hits. Drew Ellis has taken 85 at-bats in the majors throughout his career with Arizona and Seattle but logged just a .482 OPS.
Phillies Starting Lineup
Taijuan Walker vs. Max Scherzer
Taijuan Walker is coming off a good start in Atlanta, allowing just three earned runs in six and two-thirds innings. Walker holds a 4-2 record on the year with a 5.57 ERA and 43 Ks in 53.1 total innings.
Max Scherzer has yet to allow an earned run at home this season, as he’ll make his third start at Citi Field in 2023. Scherzer has allowed two earned runs over his last three starts (18 innings) while walking just three and striking out 19.
