The Phillies wrapped up a weekend series against the Washington Nationals last night in Williamsport, PA on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball with a 4-3 loss to drop 2 of 3 in the series.

Zack Wheeler was on the mound and immediately ran into trouble in the first, allowing four runs to put the Phillies in a 4-0 hole. Following the first inning, Wheeler did settle in, tossing seven innings, allowing just those four runs in the first, while walking one while striking out five.
Phillies Silent in the Finale
- Kyle Schwarber: 0-3, BB, K
- Bryce Harper: 0-3, BB
- Alec Bohm: 0-3, BB
- Nick Castellanos: 1-4, 2 K
Unfortunately, after Wheeler’s bad first, that was essentially the ballgame as the Phillies struggled to get anything going until the top of the ninth inning.
They struggled to get to Trevor Williams and really, anyone on the Nationals pitching staff until the top of the ninth inning when Jake Cave and Brandon Marsh finally got them on the board to make the final score a “respectable” 4-3 loss.

Phillies Hunt for Red October
Even after dropping 2 of 3 over the weekend and 5 of 7, the Phillies still find themselves atop of the NL Wild Card standings with a 3.5 game lead over the D-Backs, Reds, and Marlins, while holding a two game advantage over the San Francisco Giants, who they’ll welcome to Citizens Bank Park tonight for a 3-game series.

Phillies close out August at Home
The Phillies are just 33-33 on the road this season while holding a 34-32 record at home. The good news, is that the next three series will be played at Citizens Bank Park before entering the final month of the regular season.
