Phillies Spring Training Roster Moves

Phillies announce several roster moves as they continue to trim down Spring Training roster

With Opening Day less than a week away, the Philadelphia Phillies continue to trim down their Spring Training roster.

According to the team, outfielders David Dahl and Cal Stevenson along with utility-man Scott Kingery (pain) were reassigned to minor league camp Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson was optioned to Triple A, and right-hander David Buchanan, outfielder Jordan Luplow along with catchers Aramis Garcia and Cam Gallagher were reassigned to minor league camp.

Buchanan was in the mix to land a spot in the bullpen as a long-relief option for the Phillies but with the news that he’s been optioned to Triple A, we’re slim pickings at the moment.

Koby Allard, Max Castillo, and Nick Nelson have also been optioned to Triple A and Dylan Covey (gross) is currently on the injured list with a shoulder injury.

That would have left Spencer Turnbull as the man for the job but with news that Taijuan Walker may miss the start of the regular season, Turnbull will be the first option (right now) to replace him in the starting rotation.

Turnbull, who spent five seasons in Detroit before joining the Phillies over the offseason, has appeared in four games during Spring Training, posting a 2.25 ERA with 12 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP over eight innings of work.

Phillies 2024 Bench Options

Assuming Johan Rojas makes the major league roster (he shouldn’t) then the Phillies bench is pretty much set, just five days away from hosting the Atlanta Braves on Opening Day, March 28th.

  • Whit Merrifield
  • Edmundo Sosa
  • Garrett Stubbs
  • Cristian Pache or Jake Cave

Last week, I touched on all the reasons why Johan Rojas, while being an elite centerfielder, should start the season in Triple A Lehigh Valley. If you want to rehash that conversation, I’d be happy to do so after you read what I had to say on the topic here

The Phillies still have major question marks on their pitching staff and honestly, it doesn’t look like they have many options outside of exploring what’s left of the free agent market or taking a chance on someone like Mick Abel with an early-call up to the major league level.
