Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie addresses his decision to keep Nick Sirianni after team’s collapse in 2023

Somehow, it’s only been over two months since the Eagles season ended in a monumental collapse.

After losing six of their last seven games, which included a first-round exit in the Wildcard round to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The biggest question that arose from that situation was whether or not to keep Nick Sirianni. A lot would go into such a major decision. Regardless of what’s said on social media or discussed on radio shows, Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman, who are both actually in the building every day, had the intel they needed to come to the appropriate conclusion.

Jeffrey Lurie on the decision to retain Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni

“A very disappointing ending but I don’t take light 31-7 in the National Football League. That’s extraordinary. And so the ingredients that I’ve always seen with Nick are very obvious: The ability to connect, the ability to be authentic, incredible work ethic, high football IQ.

All the reasons that he was hired in the first place have been almost magnified in the first three years because they’ve been extremely successful and yet that doesn’t ever take away from the hard look at the disappointment and frustration as it ended.”

It’s worth noting in this press conference that Lurie compared the Eagles’ situation last year to that of the 49ers and the Chiefs.

He pointed out that both of those teams found themselves in different rough patches throughout the season but ended up playing through them and making it to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Eagles weren’t able to do anywhere near the same.

So it would take quite the plan from the Eagles head coach to convince Lurie that he’s the guy for the job moving forward.

Even though Nick has had a lot of success in these few years, if you lose the locker room or even lack a convincing plan to fix the team’s issues, Lurie wouldn’t be hesitant to move on from him. Clearly, after listening to both Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni, Lurie was encouraged by their plans for the future of the franchise.

“The things with Nick, I have to say, were really impressive were wanting to truly improve the ingredients of the offense, truly improve who was going to lead, in terms of leading the offense and the direction it would go.

Wanted it to be much more innovative, much more dynamic. Of course, bring the things that brought us a lot of success but very open to finding the best possible offensive coordinator.”

And the same with defensive coordinator. He’s an offensive head coach more but he recognized that Vic Fangio was somebody that would be an outstanding defensive coordinator for us.

I mean we talked about his systems for years and all the people that you know he developed and now we have the guy that really kind of fathered the certain approach to defense.”

Say what you want about Sirianni, but I trust the opinions of both Lurie and Roseman over whatever sports talk shows are saying. The Eagles owner has proven he can build a championship contender (several times) and a Super Bowl winner.

Since 1999, the Birds have brought in several coaches who have led the team to a Super Bowl appearance and a quarterback to get them there. Not many franchises can say that.
