Meet The Rookie: New Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell

The 2024 NFL draft found Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles absolutely killing it (once again).

They got things started off by drafting a cornerback in the first round for the first time since 2002 with the 22nd overall pick.

That was cornerback was Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell. A 23-year-old who tested extremely well during the pre-draft process, running an official 4.33 (!) 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Mitchell earned an overall 9.79 Relative Athletic Score, which ranks as a top 50 score in RAS history among cornerbacks.

Mitchell was a three-sport athlete growing up as he played basketball and did track in High School along with football. He excelled on the field in high cchool which made him a three-star recruit. He committed to play for Toledo after his senior year.

Mitchell played all four seasons with Toledo and even played all of the Rockets’ games as a true freshman in 2020. He became a full-time starter in 2021 and never relinquished the position. He was a two-time first-team All-MAC player and won those honors in 2022 and 2023.

Although he stayed at Toledo his entire collegian career, Mitchell had many opportunities to transfer to bigger schools. He decided to remain loyal to the school that offered him a shot to play ball at the D1 level and displayed incredible loyalty in a world where college athletes are transferring more than ever.

Quinyon Mitchell offers great size and athleticism for a cornerback. Mitchell is an amazing zone coverage cornerback who is a great scheme fit for a Vic Fangio defense. He can play man as well, but he won’t be asked to do that much as long as Fangio is running the show. Quinyon draws comparisons to longtime Eagles cornerback Darius Slay and will have the chance to work with Slay in Philadelphia.

Mitchell’s vision in zone coverage which offers elite route recognition alongside his incredible athleticism will likely make for a very good NFL career. He also obtains amazing ball skills that were showed off during his time at Toledo.

Another ability of Mitchell is his tackling. Eagles fans will LOVE to hear that Quinyon Mitchell is a very willing and fundamentally sound tackler. Mitchell’s diverse and versatile skill set is a major reason he was a first-round pick.

All in all, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted an amazing player and person in the first round who very well could have an immediate impact on the field. Howie Roseman and company did an amazing job drafting Mitchell and very well may have found the heir apparent to Darius Slay.
