No Happy Faces: Phillies lose 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays, will head to Miami for weekend series against the Marlins
Well, you can’t win every single Major League Baseball game I guess, right? The Phillies had a rare off-day yesterday afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays, losing 5-3 to split the two-game series.
The loss snapped a 7-game win streak for The Fightins and also ended their 11-game home winning streak at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies just didn’t have it yesterday. It’s bound to happen for sure but when a pitcher like Chris Bassitt retires 12-straight batters at one point in the game and we suffered through Aaron Nola getting “small-balled” into submission, then there’s reasons to be pissed at the final box score.
Nola was on the mound for the Phillies yesterday and carried a 1-1 tie into the sixth inning before coughing up three runs to put the Blue Jays ahead 4-1. On the say, Nola pitched 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, four earned runs and zero walks while striking out seven.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. put Toronto ahead 1-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single. The Phillies would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sac fly from Kyle Schwarber.
Down 4-1, Bryson Stott cut into the Blue Jays’ lead with a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh, only to have Orion Kerkering cough up an RBI single to Kevin Kiermaier in the 8th to put the Toronto up 5-2.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bryson Stott doubled on a line drive to right fielder to cut the deficit to two runs. Unfortunately, that was all she wrote for the Phillies. They had runners on second and third with one out only to have Kody Clemens and Whit Merrifield each pop out to end the ballgame.
Kyle Schwarber Postgame (Love to hear it)
The Phillies went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The loss wrapped up a six game homestand, which they finished with a 5-1 record. On the season, the Phillies are 26-12 and in first place in the NL East Standings. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games and hold a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, who are just 4-6 over their last 10.

The Phillies will now head to Miami for a three-game series against one of the worst teams in baseball in the Miami Marlins. Worth noting, the Marlins traded Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres last week, which was basically the first sign of “waiving the white flag” on the 2024 season before we even made it to summer.
