Aaron Nola Three Pitches

Aaron Nola needed just three pitches over 85 seconds to complete the 7th inning yesterday against the New York Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies swept a quick two-game series against the Mets, winning the finale yesterday afternoon by a final score of 4-0. Aaron Nola threw a complete game shutout, striking out eight.

Nola carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before allowing a single to Tyrone Taylor to lead off the inning. With the Phillies leading 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Nola threw just three pitches, taking 85 seconds, to retire the side and send the game into the eighth.

Starling Marte took pitch number one to centerfield on a bloop-hit single. Francisco Lindor lined out to second base and Pete Alonso hit into a double play to end the inning.

Nola’s seventh was the fourth three-pitch inning of the season, and the third that included a hit.

It was a rare inning, for sure. There have been a total of 232 no-hitters in Major League Baseball history. Aaron Nola’s 3-pitch inning was just the 202nd in MLB history.

With the win, the Phillies swept the Mets in a short two-game series at Citi Field. They will now head back to South Philly to play another two-game series against the Mets before opening up a weekend series at home against the Nationals.

At 30-13, the Phillies are in first place in the National League East standings, two games ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves. They are 8-2 over the 10 games and the first team this season to hit the 30-win mark.
