Former Washington Nationals top prospect Victor Robles DFA’d in favor of Lane Thomas

The Washington Nationals have designated outfielder Victor Robles for assignment in favor of activating Lane Thomas from the injured list. Robles, a former top prospect in all of Major League Baseball will now be traded or released by the Nationals organization.

With Robles DFA’d, Patrick Corbin and Tanner Rainey are the only players from the Nationals’ 2019 World Series team who remain on the active roster.

Hard to believe at this point, but Victor Robles was often mentioned in the same sentences as Juan Soto. The duo were considered two of the top young talents in all of Major League Baseball. 

Robles specifically, was a consensus Top 5 MLB prospect. Entering the 2019 season, he was listed as No. 4 overall and showed promise, racking up 17 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases in his first full season. 

Back in 2020 when the Nationals were targeting Nolan Arenado and Kris Bryant, they were even reluctant to trade him. Unfortunately, Robles’ “promise” never continued. He appeared in 530 games over parts of eight seasons with the Nationals, hitting .236 with 31 home runs.

Robles, 27, hit .120 with two RBI, five walks, four stolen bases and three runs scored in 14 games with Washington this season.

Now, he will serve as yet another example on why no prospect is ever untouchable – something the Philadelphia Phillies should definitely keep in mind ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline.
