Klay Thompson plans to have free agency discussion with Philadelphia 76ers
Free agent guard and five time all-star Klay Thompson plans to have a meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers along with the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers via ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the Golden State Warriors were prepared to lose Klay Thompson as he hits unrestricted free agency. Thompson was a franchise cornerstone for Golden State, who helped the Warriors form one of the most dominant dynasties in NBA history.
Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report believes that Thompson felt disrespected by the Warriors organization: “I believe the Warriors are probably offering him an annually, low $20M-type of contract. Is he willing to walk away from that because he feels disrespected? It looks like he is.”
Would the 76ers pursue Klay Thompson?
If Klay Thompson’s asking price is north of an annual salary of $20 million, then the 76ers should look elsewhere to utilize their estimated $58 million in cap space as Thompson isn’t worth such a steep price at this stage of his decorated career.
Klay Thompson likely wouldn’t take a pay cut to join the 76ers considering his reported desire for a $20+ million annual salary, so Philadelphia acquiring both him and Paul George likely wouldn’t happen. If anything Thompson is possibly a backup plan for the 76ers if their pursuit of George falls through.
Thompson is coming off a 2023-2024 season where he averaged 17.9 points per game and 2.3 assists per game on 57.6% true-shooting (0.4% below NBA average) and 38.7% perimeter shooting (9.0 attempts per game).
