Philadelphia 76ers reportedly interested in reunion with forward Marcus Morris Sr.

In a free agent market where veterans are routinely being scooped up, the Philadelphia 76ers desperately need a power forward and that void could be partially filled by a familiar face. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the 76ers have expressed interest in bringing back forward Marcus Morris Sr.

Marcus Morris’ brief stint with the 76ers

Philadelphia native Marcus Morris Sr. was acquired by the 76ers from the James Harden trade that sent him to the Los Angles Clippers early on in the 2023-2024 season. At the 2024 trade deadline, the 76ers flipped Morris in a three-team deal that ultimately netted them Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers. Morris finished the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers via the buy-out market.

In 37 games with Philadelphia, Marcus Morris Sr. averaged 6.7 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game on 55.9% true-shooting (-2.1% below NBA average) coming off the bench. Through his brief tenure 76ers tenure, Morris was a great energy guy who provided quick scoring in bunches and semi decent floor-spacing while earning the keys to the city in the process.

Should the 76ers bring back Marcus Morris Sr?

If Philadelphia chose to bring back Marcus Morris Sr. it would more than likely be on a minimum deal, which would fit their current financial goal, which is to stay under the first tax apron by filling out their roster with veteran minimum contracts and utilizing whatever cap space they have left to obtain a starting caliber player. At this point in his 12 year career, Morris should no longer be a starter on a contending team, but he could provide decent depth at a low price.

Philadelphia could generate as much as $9.2 million in cap space by getting rid of Paul Reed, who’s set to make $7.7 million next season. With such cap space, the 76ers have reportedly been interested in the likes of Caleb Martin and Haywood Highsmith.
