Paul George Leaving Los Angeles Clippers

WATCH: Paul George details decision to leave the Los Angeles Clippers in Free Agency

After months of negotiations leading up to the official start of NBA Free Agency, Paul George and the Clippers failed to reach common ground on a new contract to keep him in Los Angeles.

On the latest episode of his “Podcast P with Paul George” show, which was released on Monday., George went into detail on his departure from the Clippers. George said the first extension offer he received from the Clippers was last October for $60 million over two years – an offer that he found to be “kind of disrespectful.”

Speaking of disrespectful…

Even after the Clippers eventually offered something in the range of $40-45 million, George still thought that was too low of an offer and once he found out his teammate Kawhi Leonard agreed to a three-year, $153 million extension, he told the Clippers he would be willing to accept the same.

“Then I hear wind of what they’re gonna give Kawhi, so I’m like, ‘Just gimme what Kawhi got. Y’all view us the same. We came here together. We wanna finish this s– together. I’ll take what Kawhi got, no problem…”

When George asked for a no-trade clause in his contract, the Clippers declined to add that to their proposal which led to him asking for a full max of $212 million over four years.

We know what happened next. George and his camp met with 76ers’ Daryl Morey, Josh Harris, and Elton Brand along with franchise legend Julius Erving. The Sixers even brought a front office executive, Peter Dinwiddie, who is a familiar face and friend of George’s from their years together with the Indiana Pacers.

Shortly after the meeting, George inked a four-year/$212 contract with the 76ers and he will now join forces with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

“So then now, I’m like, alright, well then it only makes sense for me to do four years, $212 million. At least pay me the money,” George said. “If y’all gonna trade me then y’all gonna trade me, but at least now I’m not in a situation where I could have got more had I just gone to free agency (rather) than take this deal and y’all can just ship me wherever y’all want and now I’m on this deal that I didn’t even want.”
